A single bed is 3’0 wide by 6’3 long – 90cm by 190cm – and remains the standard for children’s rooms, spare rooms and box rooms. Where floor space is genuinely tight, a small single at 2’6 (76cm) buys back another 14cm without dropping to a child-sized frame.Because single rooms are usually the smallest in the house, storage is worth paying for: frames with two or four underbed drawers, gas-lift ottoman singles that open the whole base, and guest beds with a pull-out second mattress for sleepovers all recover space a chest of drawers would otherwise take.Finishes include solid pine, oak, painted white and grey, metal and upholstered fabric.
