A coffee table is judged by two measurements. Height should sit within a few centimetres of your sofa seat – too tall and it crowds the room, too low and reaching a mug becomes a stretch. Length looks best at roughly two thirds of the sofa, with 40 to 45cm of legroom in front.Beyond proportion it is a question of how much the table has to hold.
